With an extended leg and a bit of luck Valentin Chesus prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 23 minutes into the match, River Plate's Abel Gaspard sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Diego Miro narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The supporters of River Plate booed when Gambrinus City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 47 match minutes in a wonderful position. German Basajaun didn't get a good kick on the ball.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Pablo Pelagius to make the kick off.
