With a little luck, Newell´s's Vladan Kovačević got control of the ball when Domingo Cavallo tried to sneak it across the goal line. Vladan Kovačević made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Gernando Cordeiro in the 10th minute of play. In the 11th minute Catarinense F.C. were awarded a corner. Jorge Ler went to the cornerflag to take it. Newell´s's Vladan Kovačević proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 15th minute of the match, managed to save Newell´s from getting a goal against them. In the 17thth minute of the game Amarante Sierra who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Newell´s's Vladan Kovačević was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Newell´s were furious when Milan Baroš was red carded, 18 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. After 18 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Newell´s! Newell´s:s Vladan Kovačević showed great skill when he stopped Jorge Ler:s penalty. An unexpectedly hard shot by Pablo Hermon in the 21st minute of play forced Catarinense F.C.'s goalkeeper José Chilavert to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Vladan Kovačević showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Lucas Papacharalabous in the 22nd minute of the match. Vladan Kovačević made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Amarante Sierra in the 24th minute of play. Catarinense F.C. were awarded a corner in the 26th minute after Newell´s's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Jorge Ler took the corner. Catarinense F.C.'s Jorge Ler was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Vladan Kovačević in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Gernando Cordeiro could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 34th minute of the match, but Vladan Kovačević made a huge save. In the 36th minute, Amarante Sierra got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After 46 played minutes Catarinense F.C. got a freekick which was hit by Lucas Papacharalabous. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Pablo Hermon made a kick off. Garaile Vigalondo kicked well hit freekick during the 53rd minute of the match. With a little luck, Catarinense F.C.'s José Chilavert got control of the ball when Pablo Hermon tried to sneak it across the goal line. After a rather tough play, Catarinense F.C.'s Fernando Gabirel got a free kick in the 58th minute. Newell´s's Raul Benvido was substituted for Mauro Santo. 62 minutes into the match, Catarinense F.C.'s goalkeeper José Chilavert had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Cleto Laffitte. In the 63rd match minute, Catarinense F.C. was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Emanuel Mendiko to maneuver through the defense. Vladan Kovačević took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jorge Ler, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cleto Laffitte got free with José Chilavert in the 72nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Cleto Laffitte in the 72nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg José Chilavert saved Catarinense F.C. from getting behind. Cleto Laffitte's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but José Chilavert read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 79th minute of play. Newell´s's Raul Benvido managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Zhu Chao Guang in the 85 minute of the game. Cleto Laffitte charged in rather forcefully in the 87th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Cleto Laffitte the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Catarinense F.C. booed when Newell´s was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 88 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cleto Laffitte didn't get a good kick on the ball. 88 minutes into the match, Catarinense F.C.'s Georgiy Voroshilov sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Vladan Kovačević narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Through an outstanding action, after 90 minutes, José Chilavert successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Georgiy Voroshilov took the ball and in the 93 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Vladan Kovačević. Vladan Kovačević dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-0. Catarinense F.C. were really happy, having secured the victory after a very even contest. They thanked the players of Newell´s for a fine match.
