With a left leg Ben Saidi saved Shrewsbury City from getting behind. 20 minutes into the game, Swadlincote's Karim Negrouz nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Ben Saidi made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. In the 24th minute of the game, Khaled Mosrati landed unfortunately after trying to head the ball, and pulled a muscle in the back, so badly that he had to leave the field. 24 minutes into the game, Zine Boukorâa was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Swadlincote's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Shrewsbury City the free kick. After a rather tough play, Swadlincote's Zine Boukorâa got a free kick in the 25th minute. Anis Laabidi struck a weak shot in the 26th minute. Ahmed Younes didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Shrewsbury City. In the 45th minute of the match, Anis Laabidi tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Ahmed Younes saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The supporters of Swadlincote booed when Shrewsbury City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 68 match minutes in a wonderful position. Habib Mechemeche didn't get a good kick on the ball.
