Heriot United's supporters crossed their fingers, but Graeme Barton was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The Heriot United fans' excitement grew in the 16th match minute when Heriot United's Graeme Barton looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 1-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. When Barry Stenhouse came up free with the goalie in the 35th minute, the Stonehaven fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Barry Stenhouse couldn't finish the play. Heriot United's Nicholas Cluny got a good chance for a goal in the 39th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Graeme Barton was extremely unlucky when he, in the 41st minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. In the 47th minute, Ter Goudie hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

Stonehaven's George McTear played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Graeme Barton in the 52nd minute of play. When Steve Elder fell near the penalty area in the 53rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Heriot United's protests and gave Steve Elder a yellow card for diving instead. In the 53rd minute, Steve Elder hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After having played for 55 minutes, Barry Stenhouse managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. After a defensive mix-up in Stonehaven's zone, Nicholas Cluny stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. George McTear came out of the goal and Nicholas Cluny tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Graeme Barton came up free with the goalie in the 74th minute, the Heriot United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Graeme Barton couldn't finish the play. Phil Gallie's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Kenneth McCartney read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 77th minute of play. Graeme Barton fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without George McTear having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 90th minute, Barry Stenhouse managed to get in a good position for a shot. Stonehaven's supporters rose to their feet, but Barry Stenhouse was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Kenneth McCartney breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Heriot United's supporters were highly satisfied with the result. They cheered their team of the pitch, having watched them win a very even match.
