Robbie Docherty fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Malcolm Gunn having to interfere. In the 24th minute, Wally Fyfe ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Rick McElfrish was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. The supporters of Alloa booed when Red Devils was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 27 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gregor McVurie didn't get a good kick on the ball. Malcolm Gunn made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Robbie Docherty in the 33rd minute of play. After having played for 35 minutes, Wally Fyfe managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Alloa's supporters crossed their fingers, but Wally Fyfe was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 39 minutes into the game, Alloa's Darius McIlleriach nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Rick McElfrish made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. The audience thought a goal was coming when Terence Guthrie got free with Malcolm Gunn in the 46th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Rupert Reoch could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 48th minute of the match, but Malcolm Gunn made a huge save. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-2 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Wally Fyfe was the one to do the kick off. After a defensive mix-up in Red Devils's zone, Darius McIlleriach stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Rick McElfrish came out of the goal and Darius McIlleriach tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Through an outstanding action, after 66 minutes, Rick McElfrish successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. When Red Devils's Robbie Docherty in the 72nd minute got a chance for a shot 72nd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Alloa's goalie prevented a goal. Robbie Docherty scored 1-2 in the 73rd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Malcolm Gunn, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Rupert Reoch received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 77th minute. Malcolm Gunn tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 82 minutes into the match, Red Devils's goalkeeper Rick McElfrish had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Darius McIlleriach. Darius McIlleriach recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 84th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Wally Fyfe fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rick McElfrish having to interfere. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The Alloa players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
