An unexpectedly hard shot by Graeme Carr in the 23rd minute of play forced Newcastleton's goalkeeper John McIlduy to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Stromness booed when Newcastleton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 29 match minutes in a wonderful position. James McBean didn't get a good kick on the ball. Raymond Elliott fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Nicol Burnes having to interfere. 35 minutes into the match, Stromness's goalkeeper Nicol Burnes had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Dougal McKellaig. Newcastleton's John McIlduy played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Graeme Carr in the 38th minute of play. Raymond Elliott's late challenge caught a Stromness's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Raymond Elliott helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Newcastleton getting a freekick after 46 minutes play. Raymond Elliott hit a great ball. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

John McIlduy made a fantastic save in the 53rd minute, when Graeme Carr sent off a good shot on target. Graeme Carr recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 57th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 59th minute Dougal McKellaig shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nicol Burnes saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 63 minutes into the match, Newcastleton's goal looked a bit too open when Graeme Carr came free, but John McIlduy reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 66th minute, Tommy McDiarmid hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Fergus Lecky's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but John McIlduy read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 68th minute of play. In the 73rd minute, Dougal McKellaig hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Rupert Nelson received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 76th minute. John McIlduy tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. John McIlduy didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Stromness. Stromness were unable to convert their possession into goals, allowing Newcastleton to leave the ground with a draw.
