Montrose FC's Declan McLardy played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Willie McGruer in the 4th minute of play. 13 minutes into the game, Davie McGilroy was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Montrose FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Kilbirnie the free kick. A collision led to Kilbirnie getting a freekick after 16 minutes play. Fraser Cariston hit a great ball. Terence Bowers spun around in front of the goal 21 minutes in the game, and got away a shot that, to his disappointment, went to the left of Kilbirnie's goal. Terence Bowers received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Wally Crum tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 27 minutes into the game, Fraser Cariston cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-0. Declan McLardy was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 30th match minute, Kilbirnie was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vinny McCrain to maneuver through the defense. In the 35thth minute of the game Terence Bowers who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Kilbirnie's Wally Crum was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Kilbirnie's Wally Crum played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Terence Bowers in the 44th minute of play. Montrose FC's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Owen McSween in the 46th minute. The corner led Montrose FC's Owen McSween to fire away a dangerous shot which Wally Crum despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Willie McGruer stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Blair Georgeson got free with Wally Crum in the 59th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The crowd rose to their feet as Montrose FC's Terence Bowers slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Wally Crum. That made the score 1-1 after 60 minutes of play. Barry McClure kicked well hit freekick during the 63rd minute of the match. The audience was convinced that Willie McGruer's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Declan McLardy was relentless in the 66th minute of the game. Davie McGilroy fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 69th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Wally Crum having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Kilbirnie's zone, Blair Georgeson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Wally Crum came out of the goal and Blair Georgeson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Barry McClure charged in rather forcefully in the 73rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Barry McClure the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Barry McClure kicked well hit freekick during the 73rd minute of the match. After 81 played minutes Kilbirnie got a freekick which was hit by Fraser Cariston. The supporters of Montrose FC booed when Kilbirnie was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 84 match minutes in a wonderful position. James McCodrum didn't get a good kick on the ball. Declan McLardy came out of the goal in the 86th minute to try and stop a shot by Kilbirnie's Willie McGruer. But to his dismay, Willie McGruer quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. In the 90th minute the ball was on its way in behind Kilbirnie's goalkeeper Wally Crum, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Montrose FC's Guy McAdam got a good chance for a goal in the 92nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After having played for 94 minutes, Blair Georgeson managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Montrose FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Blair Georgeson was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 96 minutes into the match, Montrose FC's Fraser Laidlaw sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Wally Crum narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Many of Montrose FC's supporters were seen to leave the ground early as it became clear their team was going to lose. Montrose FC may have spent more time on the ball, but Kilbirnie were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
