Phil Dobbie fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 19th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jimmy McCansh having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tyler Fox in the 33rd minute of play forced Alva's goalkeeper Aaron McIan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 34th minute, Charles Inches made a precise shot to the right of Aaron McIan. Alva's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. 38 minutes into the game, Marc Borthwick was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Alva's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Inverness AFC the free kick. In a very dangerous position, a player in Alva fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 38th minute. Penalty! Aaron McIan went to the wrong direction when Quentin Gilbertson was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Charles Inches in the 44th minute of play forced Alva's goalkeeper Aaron McIan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Kenny Haws got free with Jimmy McCansh in the 47th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After the first half Inverness AFC were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Phil Dobbie to make the kick off. After 53 minutes Inverness AFC's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Marc Borthwick who took care of the corner kick. Marc Borthwick made a great header on Alva's corner, it was just that Inverness AFC's Jimmy McCansh managed to reach the ball for a save. Kenny Haws struck a weak shot in the 59th minute. Jimmy McCansh didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Alva. 61 minutes into the match, Alva's Phil Dobbie sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Jimmy McCansh narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 64th minute, Charles Inches fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Aaron McIan, passed just outside the right post. When Elliot Bates came up free with the goalie in the 66th minute, the Inverness AFC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Elliot Bates couldn't finish the play. After 67 minutes, Ken Huntly mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Alva and the Inverness AFC players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 67th match minute, Alva was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ken Huntly to maneuver through the defense. Ken Huntly kicked well hit freekick during the 71st minute of the match. Aaron McIan dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-2. Alva's Phil Dobbie got a good chance for a goal in the 82nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 91st minute of the match, Graham McKay tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Aaron McIan saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. Kenny Haws received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 94th minute. Jimmy McCansh tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Aaron McIan made a fantastic save in the 96th minute, when Elliot Bates sent off a good shot on target. The Alva manager could be seen shouting at his players as they walked down the tunnel after the match. He was clearly angry that they had squandered their superior possession, allowing Inverness AFC to win.
