Greenock
Spectators: 9193 (Terracing: 6896,
Seating: 2114, VIP seats: 183) Brechin's Jonathan Duffie started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 4th minute, Miles McAndrew left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Greenock fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-0. Jonathan Duffie fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Frank Allan having to interfere. Miles McAndrew kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Greenock's Ian Moray got a free kick in the 12th minute. If Jonathan Duffie had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 20th minute Jonathan Duffie shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frank Allan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ian Moray in the 23rd minute of play forced Brechin's goalkeeper Ian McMenzies to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The referee gave Brechin a penalty, 26 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Terence McKellaig, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Greenock's Frank Allan. 1-1. 29 minutes into the match, Brechin's goal looked a bit too open when Marc Duilach came free, but Ian McMenzies reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Miles McAndrew got free with Ian McMenzies in the 35th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The supporters of Greenock booed when Brechin was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. Terence McKellaig didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Douglas Hutchinson in the 40th minute of play forced Brechin's goalkeeper Ian McMenzies to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ian McMenzies made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ian Moray in the 41st minute of play. Miles McAndrew recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 42nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Donald McLamond during the 43rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A collision led to Brechin getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Donald McLamond hit a great ball. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 46th minute of the game. One of Brechin:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Greenock:s goal. When the match had been going on for 48 minutes, Greenock's Johnny Bateman got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Ian McMenzies.
Fergus Abbie sent away a hard shot on goal in the 57th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Brechin's Ian McMenzies played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Marc Duilach in the 59th minute of play. 60 minutes into the match, Miles McAndrew notched a goal, 3-1, to the right of Brechin's Ian McMenzies. Ian McMenzies was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. After a defensive mix-up in Brechin's zone, Fergus Abbie stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ian McMenzies came out of the goal and Fergus Abbie tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Miles McAndrew blasted a shot towards the goal in the 77th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ian McMenzies having to make a save. Ian McMenzies showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Marc Duilach in the 78th minute of the match. In the 80th minute of the match, Jonathan Duffie tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Frank Allan saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. 81 minutes into the match, Greenock's goal looked a bit too open when Terence McKellaig came free, but Frank Allan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Brechin's Brandon Goudie managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Fergus Abbie in the 84 minute of the game. After 86 minutes, Fergus Abbie mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Greenock and the Brechin players grew even worse after the yellow card. The supporters of Brechin booed when Greenock was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 86 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fergus Abbie didn't get a good kick on the ball. Frank Allan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Donald McLamond in the 91st minute of the match. After having played for 92 minutes, Jonathan Duffie managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Brechin's supporters crossed their fingers, but Jonathan Duffie was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 95th minute Miles McAndrew shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ian McMenzies saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 96 minutes into the match, Marc Duilach had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Ian McMenzies. Brechin's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Marc Duilach was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 4-1. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Greenock fans cheered their team off the field, for while Brechin had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
