After some fancy dribbling in the 3rd minute, Vivaldo Figueiras managed to get in a good position for a shot. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The crowd rose to their feet as Delfim Assis kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Nicolau Bernardes. That made the score 1-0 in the 15 minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Carlos Faro got free with Nicolau Bernardes in the 19th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Hildeberto Freitas recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 20th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Xavier Pacheco fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 23rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Nicolau Bernardes having to interfere. Nicolau Bernardes showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Delfim Assis, who was totally free with the ball in the 25th minute. A collision led to Ovar getting a freekick after 26 minutes play. Eliseu Linhares hit a great ball. 29 minutes into the match, SC Alvorge's Delfim Assis sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Nicolau Bernardes narrowly saved just below the crossbar. 31 minutes into the match, Hildeberto Freitas notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of SC Alvorge's Inácio Barbosa. Inácio Barbosa was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. If Delfim Assis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 40th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 47th minute of the match Manuel Malta sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Inácio Barbosa skillfully saved the ball. Inácio Barbosa stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Hildeberto Freitas's shot from short distance in the 49th minute. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Hildeberto Freitas to make the kick off.
