Henrique Infante started the match with the kick off. If Domingos Pinto had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 3rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. If Armando Reis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 5th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Hamid Lecœuvre charged in rather forcefully in the 6th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Hamid Lecœuvre the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 6 played minutes Maia Club got a freekick which was hit by Hamid Lecœuvre. The supporters of CF Belenenses booed when Maia Club was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 8 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hamid Lecœuvre didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 15th minute, Mário Pinto managed to get in a good position for a shot. Maia Club's supporters rose to their feet, but Mário Pinto was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Vivaldo Caetano breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Mário Pinto sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. In the 20th minute, Mário Pinto made a precise shot to the right of Vivaldo Caetano. CF Belenenses's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. The supporters of CF Belenenses booed when Maia Club was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hamid Lecœuvre didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a little luck, Maia Club's Eric Segler got control of the ball when Roberto Portugal tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 34th minute, Toninho Gaspar ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Vivaldo Caetano was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. Armando Reis received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 39th minute. Vivaldo Caetano tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Maia Club's Eric Segler proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 41st minute of the match, managed to save Maia Club from getting a goal against them. Toninho Gaspar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Vivaldo Caetano having to interfere. After the first half Maia Club were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Toninho Gaspar to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 56th minute, Mário Pinto got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. When Toninho Gaspar came up free with the goalie in the 58th minute, the Maia Club fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Toninho Gaspar couldn't finish the play. Mário Alcântara hit a great freekick 59 minutes into the match. Domingos Pinto's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Vivaldo Caetano read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 64th minute of play. After some careless play in the CF Belenenses defense, Armando Reis kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Vivaldo Caetano. The CF Belenenses fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Vivaldo Caetano should have stopped the shot. Armando Reis sent away a hard shot on goal in the 83rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Toninho Gaspar received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 85th minute. Vivaldo Caetano tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Armando Reis recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 86th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in CF Belenenses's zone, Mário Pinto stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Vivaldo Caetano came out of the goal and Mário Pinto tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Maia Club's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
