He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in SC Portugal reached it. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Yuri Castro was a little too slow when Egídio Rangel got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 53rd minute. The score was now 0-1. Rui Carvalhais made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Baltasar Quadros in the 57th minute of play. In the 59th minute Baltasar Quadros shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rui Carvalhais saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ivo Poças kicked well hit freekick during the 63rd minute of the match. Rui Carvalhais stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ivo Poças's shot from short distance in the 74th minute. Ivo Poças recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 83rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Yuri Castro took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Egídio Rangel, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When the final whistle went the supporters of Sport Lisboa & Benfica were delighted that their team had defeated the much more dominant SC Portugal side.
