If Fitz Alderson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 9th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Rueben Pitts got free with Kevin Brookman in the 14th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 22 played minutes Blackpool got a freekick which was hit by John Galway. Blackpool's Gary Haines played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Fitz Alderson in the 39th minute of play. In the 44th minute, Stephen Hassell hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell John Galway to make the kick off. After a defensive mix-up in Blackpool's zone, Fitz Alderson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Gary Haines came out of the goal and Fitz Alderson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Carl Fowler fell near the penalty area in the 59th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Blackpool's protests and gave Carl Fowler a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Eton booed when Blackpool was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 59 match minutes in a wonderful position. Carl Fowler didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 60th minute, Joe Ashworth hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some careless play in the Eton defense, Kurt Best kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Kevin Brookman. The Eton fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Kevin Brookman should have stopped the shot. In the 73rd minute, John Galway made a precise shot to the right of Kevin Brookman. Eton's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-0. Kurt Best 's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Kevin Brookman read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 76th minute of play. 80 minutes into the match, Fitz Alderson had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Gary Haines . Blackpool's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Fitz Alderson was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-1.
