The audience thought a goal was coming when Pat Deaconsfield got free with Jane Philips in the 11th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gus Short in the 15th minute of play forced Colchester's goalkeeper Jane Philips to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Colchester's Jane Philips proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 41st minute of the match, managed to save Colchester from getting a goal against them. Crispin Hoskins could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 42nd minute of the match, but Jane Philips made a huge save. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gus Short couldn't finish the play. 85 minutes into the match, Colchester's goal looked a bit too open when Gus Short came free, but Jane Philips reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Colchester's zone, Gus Short stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jane Philips came out of the goal and Gus Short tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. Gillingham fully deserved thier win.
