The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. The supporters of Northwood booed when Backwell AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 2 match minutes in a wonderful position. Carl Clement didn't get a good kick on the ball. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. If Steve Holden had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 19th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Northwood's Garth Blunt got a good chance for a goal in the 21st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Steve Holden to strike the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Albert Porter in the 51st minute of play forced Northwood's goalkeeper Barrie Price to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 52nd minute, Garth Blunt managed to get in a good position for a shot. Northwood's supporters rose to their feet, but Garth Blunt was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Kris Gillespie breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Garth Blunt received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 53rd minute. Kris Gillespie tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Clive Lowndes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 60th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Barrie Price having to interfere. Garth Blunt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 62nd minute of the match, but Kris Gillespie made a huge save. If Carl Clement had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Garth Blunt fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 67th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kris Gillespie having to interfere. With 69 minutes on the clock, Mark Benbow commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. Barrie Price showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Carl Clement in the 76th minute of the match.
