The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Mick Henman could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 7th minute of the match, but Norman Mumford made a huge save. Norman Mumford took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Philip Walsh, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Trevor Berryman sent away a hard shot on goal in the 10th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 13th minute Trevor Berryman shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Peter Mason saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Trevor Berryman hit a great freekick 14 minutes into the match. Mick Henman recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 23rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 27thth minute of the game Trevor Berryman who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but hpcsongi's Peter Mason was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 30 minutes into the game, hpcsongi's Philip Walsh nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Norman Mumford made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-0. Philip Walsh sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Philip Walsh recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 38th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Philip Walsh received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 40th minute. Norman Mumford tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Witney United's Norman Mumford proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 48th minute of the match, managed to save Witney United from getting a goal against them. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Trevor Berryman made a kick off. Derek Brownlee struck a weak shot in the 52nd minute. Norman Mumford didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for hpcsongi. Peter Mason made a fantastic save in the 59th minute, when Alistair Tyrell sent off a good shot on target. In the 65th minute Philip Walsh shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Norman Mumford saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 67th minute Trevor Berryman shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Peter Mason saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After some careless play in the Witney United defense, Mick Henman kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Norman Mumford . The Witney United fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Norman Mumford should have stopped the shot. In the 78th minute, Mick Henman got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 86 minutes into the match, Witney United's goal looked a bit too open when Philip Walsh came free, but Norman Mumford reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Witney United's zone, Mick Henman stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Norman Mumford came out of the goal and Mick Henman tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to hpcsongi getting a freekick after 94 minutes play. Martin Hoult hit a great ball. The long shot by Neil Warden in the 95th minute really tested Peter Mason's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The hpcsongi fans cheered their team off the field, for while Witney United had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
