The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. The supporters of Shamrock Rovers booed when Kells Utd was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 2 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ryley Matthews didn't get a good kick on the ball. Charly Meulemans made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Denny McCready in the 8th minute of play. 16 minutes into the match, Kells Utd's goal looked a bit too open when Robustiano Tino came free, but Brann Benson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Robustiano Tino recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 19th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. A collision led to Kells Utd getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Denny McCready hit a great ball. 26 minutes into the match, Kells Utd's goal looked a bit too open when Robustiano Tino came free, but Brann Benson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Charly Meulemans showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Denny McCready, who was totally free with the ball in the 31st minute. Charly Meulemans took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Denny McCready, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Brann Benson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Robustiano Tino in the 39th minute of play. In the 41st minute Desmond Tracy shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Charly Meulemans saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Shamrock Rovers's Beothach McIan quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Ryley Matthews, made in the 47th minute of the game. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Desmond Tracy was the one to do the kick off. Robustiano Tino fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 55th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brann Benson having to interfere. Ryley Matthews hit a great freekick 57 minutes into the match. When the match had gone on for 59 minutes, Robustiano Tino put it in 2-1 from a short distance just to the right of Brann Benson. The Shamrock Rovers fans' excitement grew in the 62nd match minute when Shamrock Rovers's Robustiano Tino looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. In the 67th minute Brefni Benson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Brann Benson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Kells Utd's zone, Robustiano Tino stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Brann Benson came out of the goal and Robustiano Tino tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Robustiano Tino fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 91st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brann Benson having to interfere. Desmond Tracy received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 93rd minute. Charly Meulemans tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When the referee ended the match the Shamrock Rovers players were able to celebrate. They had won a fair victory and recieved the ovations of their fans.
