Jim Edmunds made in the 5th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by North Shields's Tommy Bird. In the 7th minute, Devon Sawyer hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Marek Forrest came up free with the goalie in the 8th minute, the North Shields fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Marek Forrest couldn't finish the play. Alec Beardsley took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Greg Gale, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 14 minutes into the match, North Shields's goal looked a bit too open when Anthony Knowles came free, but Alec Beardsley reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A collision led to North Shields getting a freekick after 16 minutes play. Johnathan Holmes hit a great ball. North Shields's Marek Forrest got a good chance for a goal in the 18th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. If Greg Gale had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Alec Beardsley made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Greg Gale in the 23rd minute of play. In the 26th match minute, Chalfont United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jim Edmunds to maneuver through the defense. 31 minutes into the match, Chalfont United's goalkeeper Duncan Deacon had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Lance Stead. The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Greg Gale was the one to do the kick off. Lance Stead hit a great freekick 52 minutes into the match. Anthony Knowles could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 54th minute of the match, but Alec Beardsley made a huge save. Duncan Deacon showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Marek Forrest in the 55th minute of the match. Greg Gale fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 60th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Alec Beardsley having to interfere. A collision led to North Shields getting a freekick after 62 minutes play. Freddy Afful hit a great ball. North Shields's Alec Beardsley played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jay Leatherdale in the 64th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 65th minute, Jay Leatherdale managed to get in a good position for a shot. Chalfont United's supporters rose to their feet, but Jay Leatherdale was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Alec Beardsley breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. North Shields's Alec Beardsley proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 69th minute of the match, managed to save North Shields from getting a goal against them. After a defensive mix-up in North Shields's zone, Anthony Knowles stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Alec Beardsley came out of the goal and Anthony Knowles tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Alec Beardsley showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Greg Gale, who was totally free with the ball in the 79th minute. Alec Beardsley made a fantastic save in the 82nd minute, when Jim Edmunds sent off a good shot on target. With his leg Alec Beardsley managed to avoid a goal in the 88thth minute, when Chalfont United's Anthony Knowles fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. North Shields's Marek Forrest got a good chance for a goal in the 90th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. When the match clock showed 92 minutes, the score became 1-0 when Marek Forrest sped through Chalfont United's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Duncan Deacon. When North Shields's Marek Forrest in the 97th minute got a chance for a shot 97th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Chalfont United's goalie prevented a goal. The North Shields players were eager to celebrate when the final whistle sounded. They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
