After a defensive mix-up in Burtonwood FC's zone, Romeo Hargreaves stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sean Hylton came out of the goal and Romeo Hargreaves tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Sean Hylton made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Romeo Hargreaves in the 14th minute of play. The supporters of Burtonwood FC booed when Rugby was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alexander Atkins didn't get a good kick on the ball. With his leg Gary Sanderson managed to avoid a goal in the 21stth minute, when Burtonwood FC's Trevor Carter fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. If CJ Sewell had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 25th minute, Buster Wilson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Travis Hopgood charged in rather forcefully in the 27th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Travis Hopgood the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After some fancy dribbling in the 32nd minute, Trevor Carter managed to get in a good position for a shot. Burtonwood FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Trevor Carter was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Gary Sanderson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 34th minute, one of Rugby:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Rugby. Trevor Carter could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 40th minute of the match, but Gary Sanderson made a huge save. In the 47th minute CJ Sewell shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sean Hylton saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Trev Heath stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. When Rugby's Romeo Hargreaves in 54 game minutes managed to cut through with the ball in front of the goal, only having to shoot. Sean Hylton guarding the goal like a pit bull was extremely focused and managed to reach the ball just by the crossbar before it went in. In the 54th minute, Buster Wilson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Alexander Atkins hit a great freekick 57 minutes into the match. CJ Sewell blasted a shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Sean Hylton having to make a save. If CJ Sewell had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After having played for 70 minutes, Trevor Carter managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Burtonwood FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Trevor Carter was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. CJ Sewell could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 73rd minute of the match, but Sean Hylton made a huge save. After having played for 75 minutes, Romeo Hargreaves managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Rugby's supporters crossed their fingers, but Romeo Hargreaves was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Sean Hylton took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Romeo Hargreaves, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Blair Porter kicked well hit freekick during the 80th minute of the match. After 82 played minutes Rugby got a freekick which was hit by Alexander Atkins. Trevor Carter sent away a hard shot on goal in the 84th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. A hard shot 86 in the game by CJ Sewell from a close distance when the talented Sean Hylton managed to make a qualified save. Burtonwood FC's players were relieved. Gary Sanderson didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Trev Heath went, in the 90th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-0 was the resulting score. Romeo Hargreaves sent away a hard shot on goal in the 95th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
