After 28 played minutes, Bury's Marlon Rusby shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Eddy Devaney came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Bury reached it. Rodd Timiney showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Junior Sutcliffe, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. Junior Sutcliffe blasted a shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Rodd Timiney having to make a save. Paul Collingwood received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 34th minute. Rodd Timiney tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Rodd Timiney made a fantastic save in the 39th minute, when Paul Collingwood sent off a good shot on target. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.
The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Eddy Lucas to strike the kick off in the second half. Pete Buxton charged in rather forcefully in the 54th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Pete Buxton the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Bury getting a freekick after 54 minutes play.
