Persepolis's supporters crossed their fingers, but Geoff Potter was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When Donald Kerr fell near the penalty area in the 4th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored The Gay Village's protests and gave Donald Kerr a yellow card for diving instead. After 4 played minutes The Gay Village got a freekick which was hit by Donald Kerr. With his leg Blair Fairbank managed to avoid a goal in the 5thth minute, when Persepolis's Derek Marchant fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. After having played for 6 minutes, Geoff Potter managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. In the 7th minute, Donald Kerr hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Derek Marchant struck a weak shot in the 9th minute. Blair Fairbank didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Persepolis. 10 minutes into the game, Geoff Potter recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Blair Fairbank. Geoff Potter showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. Edmondo Campoli hit a great freekick 16 minutes into the match. After 19 minutes, Derek Marchant made it 2-0 with a short kick to the right side. The Gay Village's Blair Fairbank tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. The Persepolis fans' excitement grew in the 24th match minute when Persepolis's Derek Marchant looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. 28 minutes into the game, Persepolis's Derek Marchant nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Blair Fairbank made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-0. Derek Marchant fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 38th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Blair Fairbank having to interfere. If Geoff Potter had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Lech Cytrynski could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 42nd minute of the match, but Blair Fairbank made a huge save. Persepolis's Derek Marchant got a good chance for a goal in the 44th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After 45 played minutes The Gay Village got a freekick which was hit by Donald Kerr. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 5-0.

When the match clock showed 55 minutes, the score became 6-0 when Derek Marchant sped through The Gay Village's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Blair Fairbank. Persepolis made a substitution. Kristian Doughty replaced Darryl Mannell. The audience was convinced that Derek Marchant's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Blair Fairbank was relentless in the 61st minute of the game. Geoff Potter received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 62nd minute. Blair Fairbank tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When the match had gone on for 64 minutes, Derek Marchant put it in 7-0 from a short distance just to the right of Blair Fairbank. After some fancy dribbling in the 67th minute, Derek Marchant managed to get in a good position for a shot. Persepolis's supporters rose to their feet, but Derek Marchant was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Blair Fairbank breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 73rd minute Derek Marchant shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Blair Fairbank saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Geoff Potter struck a weak shot in the 74th minute. Blair Fairbank didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Persepolis. If Derek Marchant had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 77th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 81st minute, Joe Street made a precise shot to the right of Isaac Elding. Persepolis's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 7-1. In the 87th minute Derek Marchant shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Blair Fairbank saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 88th match minute, Persepolis was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Geoff Potter to maneuver through the defense. Blair Fairbank didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Lech Cytrynski went, in the 91st minute, to the upper right corner, 8-1 was the resulting score. 96 minutes into the match, Persepolis's Derek Marchant sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Blair Fairbank narrowly saved just below the crossbar. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. Persepolis had played much better football throughout.
