The Manchester United fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 10th minute Cliff Cox shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mitch Mallaby saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. When Damian Salmon came up free with the goalie in the 11th minute, the Hove FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Damian Salmon couldn't finish the play. After 14 minutes, Barrie Brent mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Hove FC and the Manchester United players grew even worse after the yellow card. Barrie Brent kicked well hit freekick during the 14th minute of the match. After 18 minutes of play, Manchester United's Roger Dryden made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Mitch Mallaby was left in no man's land by his defense there! 22 minutes into the match, Hove FC's goal looked a bit too open when Cliff Cox came free, but Mitch Mallaby reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With a little luck, Manchester United's Thom Lineker got control of the ball when Damian Salmon tried to sneak it across the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cliff Cox in the 28th minute of play forced Hove FC's goalkeeper Mitch Mallaby to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Mitch Mallaby showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roger Dryden in the 29th minute of the match. Charles Pearch fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 42nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Thom Lineker having to interfere. Damian Salmon could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 45th minute of the match, but Thom Lineker made a huge save. Charles Pearch sent away a hard shot on goal in the 47th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Roger Dryden made the kick off in the second half. Thom Lineker stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Charles Pearch's shot from short distance in the 59th minute. Charles Pearch fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Thom Lineker having to interfere. In the 64th minute, Marty Howden hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 65th minute of the match Simon Spurgeon shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Mitch Mallaby showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Mitch Mallaby showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cliff Cox, who was totally free with the ball in the 67th minute. Mitch Mallaby took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cliff Cox, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Roger Dryden's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Mitch Mallaby read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 71st minute of play. Hove FC's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Cliff Cox 75 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 0-3. Barrie Brent was shown his second yellow card after 84 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Mitch Mallaby showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. The supporters of Hove FC booed when Manchester United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 87 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gwyn Bell didn't get a good kick on the ball.
