The ball went over the crossbar instead. The Hardly Athletic players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Annscroft FC were winning 0-3.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Kirk Tomlin stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Annscroft FC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Kirk Tomlin was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-3. The crowd rose to their feet as Eddy Nicoll kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Marc Harkness. That made the score 3-4 in the 86 minute of play. In the 91st minute, Reggie Whalley got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 93rd minute Eddy Nicoll shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marc Harkness saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Ashley Dobson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 98th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When the referee blew the final whistle jeers and boos were heard from the home team's supporters. They were angered to see Hardly Athletic lose a match they had controlled from the kick-off.
