Mike Sutcliffe could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 18th minute of the match, but David Carpenter made a huge save. Mike Sutcliffe scored 1-0 in the 19th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of David Carpenter, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. If Mike Sutcliffe had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 29th minute, Roger Hamilton managed to get in a good position for a shot. Sheerness United's supporters rose to their feet, but Roger Hamilton was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Chip Nelson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 39th minute, Roger Hamilton left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Sheerness United fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. If Mike Sutcliffe had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 43rd minute. That was the end of his participation in the match. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Bob Gardner to make the kick off. David Carpenter took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Bob Gardner, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Bob Gardner fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without David Carpenter having to interfere. Sheerness United's David Carpenter played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bob Gardner in the 55th minute of play. Coundon Eagles's supporters crossed their fingers, but Mike Sutcliffe was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Mike Sutcliffe fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without David Carpenter having to interfere. Bob Gardner recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 82nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Coundon Eagles's Bob Gardner got a good chance for a goal in the 83rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. David Carpenter made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bob Gardner in the 85th minute of play. Sheerness United's supporters stood up full of expectation in the 92nd minute of the game, when Niall Kelly after an extraordinary solo performance found himself with a golden opportunity in front of Coundon Eagles's goal. Niall Kelly was unfortunally a little to anxious and the ball went outside the goal. Sheerness United's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
