The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 10th minute, Ian Hart got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Travis Gilchrist made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jimmy Brindley in the 12th minute of play. Andre Hellen could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 14th minute of the match, but Marek Dobson made a huge save. If Ian Hart had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 16th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 18th minute Jimmy Brindley shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Travis Gilchrist saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 19 played minutes Durham City got a freekick which was hit by Austen Tabb. In the 20th minute of the match Abraham Folan sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Travis Gilchrist skillfully saved the ball. Andre Hellen recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 25th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Pat Chalmers charged in rather forcefully in the 33rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Pat Chalmers the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 33rd minute, Pat Chalmers hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Marek Dobson made an important save on a dangerous shot by Andre Hellen in the 36th minute. Marek Dobson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Darryl Henry in the 37th minute of play. 38 minutes into the game, Ivan Johnstone was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Southport AFC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Durham City the free kick. A collision led to Southport AFC getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. Ivan Johnstone hit a great ball. Andre Hellen recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 40th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Marek Dobson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Darryl Henry, who was totally free with the ball in the 42nd minute. If Andre Hellen had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The wind increased when Jimmy Brindley made the kick off in the second half. Darryl Henry sent away a hard shot on goal in the 51st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Durham City's Travis Gilchrist proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 60th minute of the match, managed to save Durham City from getting a goal against them. Andre Hellen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Marek Dobson having to interfere. Johnny Mason kicked well hit freekick during the 65th minute of the match. When the match had gone on for 67 minutes, Jimmy Brindley took a quick shot and it went in 0-1 without a chance for Travis Gilchrist to make any attempt to save it. 80 minutes into the match, Southport AFC's goal looked a bit too open when Andre Hellen came free, but Marek Dobson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After some fancy dribbling in the 87th minute, Darryl Henry managed to get in a good position for a shot. Durham City's supporters rose to their feet, but Darryl Henry was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Marek Dobson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Andre Hellen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Marek Dobson having to interfere. He was clearly angry that they had squandered their superior possession, allowing Southport AFC to win.
