Spectators: 5000 (Terracing: 4000, Seating: 1000, VIP seats: 0) Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Peter Rice started the match with the kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Daniel Phimister in the 9th minute of play forced Cambridge City's goalkeeper Dean Paterson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 12 minutes, Peter Rice managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cambridge City's supporters crossed their fingers, but Peter Rice was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Johnny Coombe in the 14th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Dean Paterson saved Cambridge City from getting behind. Wally Findley was a little too slow when Darren Fearns got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 17th minute. The score was now 1-0. Daniel Phimister kicked well hit freekick during the 19th minute of the match. When Peter Rice came up free with the goalie in the 23rd minute, the Cambridge City fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Peter Rice couldn't finish the play. Dean Paterson didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Daniel Phimister went, in the 34th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. Will Rooney succeeded to score despite a near miss that spronge from right pole into the goal to 2-1 in the 38th playminute. Wally Findley showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Darren Fearns in the 43rd minute of the match. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Stan Nicholson during the 44th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Stan Nicholson kicked well hit freekick during the 44th minute of the match. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Johnny Coombe stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Wally Findley made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Nat Pollock in the 54th minute of play. Cambridge City's Dean Paterson proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 55th minute of the match, managed to save Cambridge City from getting a goal against them. Dean Paterson made a fantastic save in the 57th minute, when Daniel Phimister sent off a good shot on target. Cambridge City's Darren Fearns got a good chance for a goal in the 60th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 63 minutes into the match, Cambridge City's goal looked a bit too open when Eric Button came free, but Dean Paterson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Peter Rice fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 72nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Wally Findley having to interfere. Dean Paterson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Johnny Coombe in the 79th minute of play. After 79 played minutes Cambridge City got a freekick which was hit by Callum Hill. With a little luck, Cambridge City's Dean Paterson got control of the ball when Eric Button tried to sneak it across the goal line. Cambridge City were disappointed that they only managed a draw, even though they felt themselves to be the better team.
