When Frank Leslie fell near the penalty area in the 11th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Zulu Army's protests and gave Frank Leslie a yellow card for diving instead. Frank Leslie kicked well hit freekick during the 11th minute of the match. Dave Markinson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 16th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Steve Bridgeman having to interfere. Brandon Dry hit a great freekick 17 minutes into the match. Steve Bridgeman showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gary Story-Moore, who was totally free with the ball in the 21st minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Martyn Hatcher in the 23rd minute of play forced Zulu Army's goalkeeper Steve Bridgeman to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Dave Markinson took the ball and in the 24 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Steve Bridgeman. Steve Bridgeman dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Hugh Corrigan could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 27th minute of the match, but Eddy Sheppard made a huge save. Jamie Hanley shot the penalty kick by force right in the crossbar. No goal. Bruce Lamb blasted a shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Steve Bridgeman having to make a save. Martyn Hatcher received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 37th minute. Steve Bridgeman tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Steve Bridgeman showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Dave Markinson in the 39th minute of the match. The goalkeeper, Eddy Sheppard, was totally fooled by Zulu Army's Martyn Young, who 47 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.
