Spectators: 5000 (Terracing: 4000, Seating: 1000, VIP seats: 0) Loyd Lofthouse started the match with the kick off in front of an excited audience. Rich Hurst made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Syd Haugue in the 9th minute of play. When Loyd Lofthouse came up free with the goalie in the 16th minute, the Welling fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Loyd Lofthouse couldn't finish the play. Greg Haugue fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 19th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jay Shaw having to interfere. Jay Shaw showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Al Newlyn, who was totally free with the ball in the 20th minute. Syd Haugue who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 22ndth minute tested the skills of Rich Hurst when he managed to save the team from getting behind. If Denzil Fenwick had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 28th minute, Loyd Lofthouse made a precise shot to the right of Jay Shaw. congelton saints's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. In the 31st minute, Denzil Fenwick hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Jay Shaw showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Loyd Lofthouse in the 33rd minute of the match. Syd Haugue fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rich Hurst having to interfere. Denzil Fenwick sent away a hard shot on goal in the 40th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Loyd Lofthouse struck a weak shot in the 47th minute. Jay Shaw didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Welling. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.

The wind increased when Syd Haugue made the kick off in the second half. In the 55th minute Syd Haugue shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rich Hurst saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 61st minute, Greg Haugue hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Rich Hurst took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Denzil Fenwick, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Denzil Fenwick recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 67th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Syd Haugue fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 69th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rich Hurst having to interfere. 71 minutes into the match, congelton saints's goalkeeper Jay Shaw had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Al Newlyn. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Syd Haugue in the 77th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Rich Hurst saved Welling from getting behind. After some careless play in the Welling defense, Denzil Fenwick kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Rich Hurst. The Welling fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Rich Hurst should have stopped the shot. Al Newlyn fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 88th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jay Shaw having to interfere. Rich Hurst made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Syd Haugue in the 91st minute of play. 92 minutes into the game, congelton saints's Denzil Fenwick nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Rich Hurst made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-2.
