The audience thought a goal was coming when Gregory Wilmott got free with Jeff Warden in the 21st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After a rather tough play, Halton Holegate's Drew Silk got a free kick in the 23rd minute. After 27 minutes, Joel West mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Evolution and the Halton Holegate players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 29th minute the ball was on its way in behind Evolution's goalkeeper Jim Morning, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Kristian Castledine made a kick off. Thanks to some nice moves Louie Ottaway could shoot a difficult shot in the 53rd minute, which Jim Morning however easily saved by the left post. The supporters of Evolution booed when Halton Holegate was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 55 match minutes in a wonderful position. Frazer Soussan didn't get a good kick on the ball. Dennis Poate fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 67th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jim Morning having to interfere. Richard Edwards's shot from long distance in the 69th minute was not bad at all, but Evolution's Jim Morning knew what was happening and pushed the ball into his arms just before it hit the right post. Jim Morning stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Dennis Poate's shot from short distance in the 78th minute. After having played for 81 minutes, Dennis Poate managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Halton Holegate's supporters crossed their fingers, but Dennis Poate was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.
