The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 13 minutes into the match, Widnes's goal looked a bit too open when Gareth Stamp came free, but Gordon Naylor reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Gareth Stamp sent away a hard shot on goal in the 14th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 17th minute Gareth Stamp shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gordon Naylor saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 19th minute, George Scargill reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Peter Buckler. The goal made the score 1-0. Gordon Naylor stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Lenny Huxtable's shot from short distance in the 28th minute. Gordon Naylor took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Lenny Huxtable, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Gordon Naylor didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Gareth Stamp went, in the 30th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. In the 34th minute, Lenny Huxtable got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 35 minutes into the game, Shaun Watson was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Widnes's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Real Madrid CF the free kick.
