Spectators: 7503 (Terracing: 5666, Seating: 1737, VIP seats: 100) The field was rather wet after several days of rain when Francis Donnelly took the kick off in the first half of the match. Kev Frost was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. 19 minutes into the match, Matlock's goal looked a bit too open when Francis Donnelly came free, but Kurt Bullock reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 29th minute Dave Colton shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kurt Bullock saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Matlock's zone, Simon Tompkins stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Kurt Bullock came out of the goal and Simon Tompkins tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 33 minutes into the match, Southampton's goal looked a bit too open when David Steel came free, but Kev Frost reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Dave Colton's late challenge caught a Matlock's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Dave Colton helped the player get up and apologised. Dave Colton kicked well hit freekick during the 42nd minute of the match. David Steel sent away a hard shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Kev Frost made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from David Steel in the 52nd minute of play.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Harry Stockton made a kick off. Kev Frost came out of the goal in the 58th minute to try and stop a shot by Matlock's David Steel. But to his dismay, David Steel quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. Kev Frost took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Harry Stockton, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When David Steel came up free with the goalie in the 66th minute, the Matlock fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that David Steel couldn't finish the play. Kev Frost showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Harry Stockton in the 73rd minute of the match. When Alistair Notley fell near the penalty area in the 79th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Matlock's protests and gave Alistair Notley a yellow card for diving instead. In the 82nd minute, Harry Stockton got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The audience thought a goal was coming when David Steel got free with Kev Frost in the 84th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The supporters of Matlock booed when Southampton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 86 match minutes in a wonderful position. Vernon Gower didn't get a good kick on the ball. A hard shot by Ronan Smith from long distance, 87 minutes into the match, got Kev Frost's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. David Steel who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 89thth minute tested the skills of Kev Frost when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Kev Frost stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Harry Stockton's shot from short distance in the 90th minute. David Steel received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 91st minute. Kev Frost tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If David Steel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 94th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead.
