Kevin Watson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Marty West in the 3rd minute of play. Ivan Le Tissier took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Stan Cain, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Battle AFC's Ivan Le Tissier proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 11th minute of the match, managed to save Battle AFC from getting a goal against them. After having played for 15 minutes, Danny Lynam managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Battle AFC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Danny Lynam was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 19 minutes into the game, Ben Murray was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Exeter's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Battle AFC the free kick. After a rather tough play, Exeter's Ben Murray got a free kick in the 19th minute. The audience was convinced that Stan Cain's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Ivan Le Tissier was relentless in the 24th minute of the game. 27 minutes into the match, Battle AFC's Jez Wallbank sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Kevin Watson narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 34th minute Jez Wallbank shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kevin Watson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 38thth minute of the game Jez Wallbank who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Exeter's Kevin Watson was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Stan Cain received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 48th minute. Ivan Le Tissier tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The wind increased when Marty West made the kick off in the second half. If Jez Wallbank had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 56th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. A collision led to Exeter getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. Ben Murray hit a great ball. Jez Wallbank came free with the goalkeeper in the 69th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Kevin Watson could save by the left post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Marty West in the 79th minute of play forced Exeter's goalkeeper Kevin Watson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ivan Le Tissier didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Stan Cain went, in the 85th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. 89 minutes into the game, Richard Grigg was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Battle AFC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Exeter the free kick. Richard Grigg kicked well hit freekick during the 89th minute of the match. Jez Wallbank fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kevin Watson having to interfere. Both teams had looked equal from kick-off, and no-one was surprised when the match finally ended in a draw.
