Harvey Donnelly made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 5-0. Af the end of the first half the score was 6-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Ivan McDonald made a kick off. Hugh Kennedy might have been able to make a better finish in the 53rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Harvey Donnelly. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Hugh Kennedy ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 58th minute, Samuel Linkletter ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Harvey Donnelly was frozen by the shot and now it was 8-0. In the 62nd minute Paul Poate shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Harvey Donnelly saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. When Hugh Kennedy fell near the penalty area in the 65th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored AFC Chievo Verona's protests and gave Hugh Kennedy a yellow card for diving instead.
