After 18 played minutes Laindon FC got a freekick which was hit by Trev Granger. Derek Marenghi took the ball and in the 23 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Kurt Miles. Kurt Miles dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-4. Laindon FC's Kurt Miles played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Derek Marenghi in the 26th minute of play. Derek Marenghi might have been able to make a better finish in the 30th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Kurt Miles. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Derek Marenghi ran back to his position shaking his head. After a rather tough play, Laindon FC's Kyle East got a free kick in the 32nd minute. Jukka Leppiniemi was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 33rd played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. Kurt Miles showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from George Woodhead, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. George Woodhead fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 39th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kurt Miles having to interfere. Derek Marenghi struck a weak shot in the 41st minute. Kurt Miles didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Colchester United. In the 42nd minute the ball was on its way in behind Laindon FC's goalkeeper Kurt Miles, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. 45 minutes had been played when some careless play by Laindon FC's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. In the 48thth minute of the game Derek Marenghi who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Laindon FC's Kurt Miles was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-5 lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Derek Marenghi to make the kick off. Kyle East's late challenge caught a Colchester United's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card.
