Derek Marenghi ran back to his position shaking his head. The supporters of Colchester United booed when Binsted was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 3 match minutes in a wonderful position. Brett Doughty didn't get a good kick on the ball. Howard Summerfield kicked well hit freekick during the 6th minute of the match. Tod Monkman received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Kurt Hargreaves came out and tried to block the shot, but Tod Monkman slotted it home off the left post making it 1-0 in the 7th minute. Kurt Hargreaves made an important save on a dangerous shot by Derek Marenghi in the 12th minute. 15 minutes into the game, Binsted's Carlton Boatman nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Natalio Arnas made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. In the 18th minute Tod Monkman shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kurt Hargreaves saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 19th minute, Derek Marenghi left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Colchester United fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-1. Tod Monkman's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Kurt Hargreaves firmly grabbed it by the left post. Kurt Hargreaves took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from George Woodhead, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 24 minutes into the match, George Woodhead dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Kurt Hargreaves, 3-1. George Woodhead scored 4-1 in the 27th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Kurt Hargreaves, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 32nd minute Han Bo Hong shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kurt Hargreaves saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jeff Pye-Finch hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. If Derek Marenghi had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When the match had gone on for 38 minutes, George Woodhead took a quick shot and it went in 5-1 without a chance for Kurt Hargreaves to make any attempt to save it. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 5-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Derek Marenghi to make the kick off. 52 minutes into the game, Carlton Boatman was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Binsted's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Colchester United the free kick. After a rather tough play, Binsted's Carlton Boatman got a free kick in the 52nd minute. In the 54th match minute, Binsted was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gordon Thurman to maneuver through the defense. Jukka Leppiniemi took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 55th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Kurt Hargreaves. Binsted's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tod Monkman in the 57th minute of play forced Binsted's goalkeeper Kurt Hargreaves to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to Binsted getting a freekick after 60 minutes play. Luke Hylton hit a great ball. Tod Monkman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kurt Hargreaves having to interfere. When Abayhan Erengüç came up free with the goalie in the 70th minute, the Colchester United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Abayhan Erengüç couldn't finish the play. In the 73rd minute George Woodhead shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kurt Hargreaves saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Derek Marenghi sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. Binsted's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that George Woodhead was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 9-1. Kurt Hargreaves made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from George Woodhead in the 82nd minute of play. Derek Marenghi scored 10-1 in the 86th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Kurt Hargreaves, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Binsted's Kurt Hargreaves played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Derek Marenghi in the 93rd minute of play. Colchester United's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
