Sutton Valence FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Gregory Winterburn was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Vincent Straker breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. If Billie Devine had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 8th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a rather tough play, Sutton Valence FC's Scott Ridgeway got a free kick in the 12th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A collision led to Sutton Valence FC getting a freekick after 20 minutes play. Graham Clemence hit a great ball. In the 21st minute of the match Bruce Newby sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Jack Norton skillfully saved the ball. In the 23rd minute Gregory Winterburn shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vincent Straker saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Matthew Pascoe received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 26th minute. Jack Norton tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Fraser Gerrard came up free with the goalie in the 30th minute, the East Grinstead fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Fraser Gerrard couldn't finish the play. 31 minutes into the game, Geoff Titmus was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sutton Valence FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave East Grinstead the free kick. After 31 played minutes Sutton Valence FC got a freekick which was hit by Geoff Titmus. If Gregory Winterburn had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 33rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Matthew Pascoe scored 0-1 in the 36th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Jack Norton, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. When the match clock showed 41 minutes, the score became 0-2 when Fraser Gerrard sped through Sutton Valence FC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Jack Norton. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Sutton Valence FC's Jack Norton played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Fraser Gerrard in the 54th minute of play. In the 56th minute of the match, Matthew Pascoe got a very nice opportunity to score, but Jack Norton was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Matthew Pascoe struck a weak shot in the 59th minute. Jack Norton didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for East Grinstead. Matthew Pascoes short, quick shot in the 60thth minute got Jack Norton to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. In the 62nd minute, East Grinstead's Fraser Gerrard dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 0-3. Curtis Hanley sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 76 minutes, Matthew Pascoe mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the East Grinstead and the Sutton Valence FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to East Grinstead getting a freekick after 76 minutes play. Matthew Pascoe hit a great ball. 78 minutes into the match, Sutton Valence FC's goalkeeper Jack Norton had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Curtis Hanley. Vincent Straker showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gregory Winterburn, who was totally free with the ball in the 79th minute. The supporters of Sutton Valence FC booed when East Grinstead was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 80 match minutes in a wonderful position. Curtis Hanley didn't get a good kick on the ball. If Billie Devine had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Fraser Gerrard in the 90th minute of play forced Sutton Valence FC's goalkeeper Jack Norton to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Niall Hurst did some fancy footwork in front of goal and succeeded to deceive the defenders so he could slam the ball in 0-4 to the left of a surprised Jack Norton 95 minutes into the match. When the match was over East Grinstead could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Sutton Valence FC throughout the match.
