Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Charles Gunn started the match with the kick off. The audience was convinced that Gregory Winterburn's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Pete Halford was relentless in the 8th minute of the game. If Billie Devine had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 9th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Sutton Valence FC booed when Huddersfield FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gez Hold didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Derek Pitt in the 14th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Jack Norton prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Derek Pitt received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 20th minute. Jack Norton tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 22 minutes into the match, Derek Pitt had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Jack Norton. Sutton Valence FC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Derek Pitt was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. Bobby Evans hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. In the 33rd minute, Todd Whittaker sent off a long shot on goal, but the shot was nowhere near the goal and Sutton Valence FC's Jack Norton didn't even have to move. Charles Gunn sent away a hard shot on goal in the 35th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. The audience was convinced that Derek Pitt's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jack Norton was relentless in the 38th minute of the game. An unexpectedly hard shot by Charles Gunn in the 40th minute of play forced Sutton Valence FC's goalkeeper Jack Norton to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Jack Norton took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Charles Gunn, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When Graham Clemence fell near the penalty area in the 43rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Sutton Valence FC's protests and gave Graham Clemence a yellow card for diving instead. Derek Pitt fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 46th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jack Norton having to interfere. The Sutton Valence FC players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Huddersfield FC were winning 0-2.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Gregory Winterburn to strike the kick off in the second half. With a little luck, Sutton Valence FC's Jack Norton got control of the ball when Derek Pitt tried to sneak it across the goal line. Charles Gunn who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 59thth minute tested the skills of Jack Norton when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Gordon Newman's late challenge caught a Sutton Valence FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gordon Newman helped the player get up and apologised. In the 62nd minute, Gordon Newman hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Billie Devine sent away a hard shot on goal in the 64th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After a rather tough play, Huddersfield FC's Gordon Newman got a free kick in the 65th minute. Derek Pitt succeeded to score despite a near miss that spronge from right pole into the goal to 0-3 in the 70th playminute. Huddersfield FC's Pete Halford played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gregory Winterburn in the 76th minute of play. 77 minutes into the match, Huddersfield FC's goal looked a bit too open when Billie Devine came free, but Pete Halford reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Cliff Reynolds charged in rather forcefully in the 77th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Cliff Reynolds the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 77th minute, Cliff Reynolds hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Huddersfield FC's Charles Gunn got a good chance for a goal in the 82nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar.
