After 9 played minutes Gästrike-hammarby got a freekick which was hit by Alex Magnusson. 12 minutes into the game, Kärrtorp United's Claes Dahlberg nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Dag Isaksson made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. 18 minutes into the game, Dag Vennerberg was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Kärrtorp United's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Gästrike-hammarby the free kick. Börje Hökqvist made a fantastic save in the 27th minute, when Marcus Västerberg sent off a good shot on target. The supporters of Gästrike-hammarby booed when Kärrtorp United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 28 match minutes in a wonderful position. Bertil Myr didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 30th minute, Gösta Lindqvist hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Marcus Västerberg received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 33rd minute. Börje Hökqvist tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Marcus Västerbergs short, quick shot in the 45thth minute got Börje Hökqvist to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. In the 46th match minute, Kärrtorp United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Bertil Myr to maneuver through the defense. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Tom Bergsten to make the kick off. Börje Hökqvist showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jörn Wahlström in the 54th minute of the match. Jörn Wahlström took the ball and in the 56 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Börje Hökqvist. Börje Hökqvist dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-1. If Bertil Myr had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. After a rather tough play, Gästrike-hammarby's Jörn Wahlström got a free kick in the 67th minute. Börje Hökqvist showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jörn Wahlström, who was totally free with the ball in the 74th minute. Kärrtorp United's Börje Hökqvist played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jörn Wahlström in the 78th minute of play. In the 79th minute the ball was on its way in behind Kärrtorp United's goalkeeper Börje Hökqvist, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Marcus Västerberg scored 3-2 in the 82nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Börje Hökqvist, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Kärrtorp United's Tom Bergsten got a good chance for a goal in the 90th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 93 minutes into the game, Gästrike-hammarby's Marcus Västerberg nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Börje Hökqvist made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-2. Kärrtorp United's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
