Benedenheul's Jan-Willem Klooster got a good chance for a goal in the 7th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 13th minute, Jan van Schaik managed to get in a good position for a shot. Varsselder HC's supporters rose to their feet, but Jan van Schaik was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jan Telkamp breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 14th minute, Hans van Dartel hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Arno Ricksen's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Jan Telkamp read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 15th minute of play. In the 17th minute, Gert Roodenburg left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Varsselder HC fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 21st minute, Johan Scholte hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. With a little luck, Varsselder HC's Gert Strobos got control of the ball when Jos van Zomeren tried to sneak it across the goal line. Jan Telkamp showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Arno Ricksen, who was totally free with the ball in the 31st minute. It was a penalty for Benedenheul! The referee gave Varsselder HC a penalty, 34 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Menno Horring, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Benedenheul's Jan Telkamp. 0-2. Jan-Willem Klooster struck a weak shot in the 40th minute. Gert Strobos didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Benedenheul. In the 45thth minute of the game Gert Roodenburg who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Benedenheul's Jan Telkamp was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. If Gert Roodenburg had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 49th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Jan-Willem Klooster received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 54th minute. Gert Strobos tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Hans van Dartel kicked well hit freekick during the 56th minute of the match. Arno Ricksen sent away a hard shot on goal in the 59th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Benedenheul's Jan Telkamp played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Arno Ricksen in the 68th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jan-Willem Klooster in the 73rd minute of play forced Varsselder HC's goalkeeper Gert Strobos to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a rather tough play, Varsselder HC's Jan van Schaik got a free kick in the 74th minute. In the 78th minute Jan-Willem Klooster shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gert Strobos saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 79th minute, Gert Roodenburg got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 85 minutes into the match, Varsselder HC's Gert Roodenburg sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Jan Telkamp narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Varsselder HC eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
