The referee felt a red card was in order, 13 minutes into the game, when Evan Ghio put in a rough tackle. After 12 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Mellieħa! Kurt Mangion had in the 14thth minute some difficulties stopping Daniel Abdilla's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. 14 minutes into the match, Daniel Abdilla notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Mellieħa's Kurt Mangion. Kurt Mangion was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Adrian Grech Cumbo in the 20th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Kurt Mangion prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Kalkara Utd's Mark Carabott proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 21st minute of the match, managed to save Kalkara Utd from getting a goal against them. In the 24th match minute, Kalkara Utd was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Kevin Sammut to maneuver through the defense. After a defensive mix-up in Kalkara Utd's zone, Massimo Pace stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mark Carabott came out of the goal and Massimo Pace tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Kurt Mangion showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Adrian Grech Cumbo, who was totally free with the ball in the 29th minute. Kurt Mangion showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Kevin Sammut in the 30th minute of the match. An unexpected shot in the 32nd minute by Massimo Pace got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Mellieħa's Massimo Pace got a good chance for a goal in the 34th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. If Peter Debono had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 36th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a rather tough play, Mellieħa's Domenic Debono got a free kick in the 37th minute. In the 39th minute of the match Daniel Abdilla shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Kurt Mangion showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Massimo Pace struck a weak shot in the 40th minute. Mark Carabott didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Mellieħa. Peter Debono sent away a hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Peter Debono fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mark Carabott having to interfere. Kurt Mangion showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Marc Bigeni in the 48th minute of the match.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Adrian Grech Cumbo made a kick off. Mellieħa's Peter Debono got a good chance for a goal in the 53rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After having played for 55 minutes, Domenic Debono managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Mellieħa's supporters crossed their fingers, but Domenic Debono was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 60th minute, Domenic Debono managed to get in a good position for a shot. Mellieħa's supporters rose to their feet, but Domenic Debono was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mark Carabott breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Peter Debono fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 63rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mark Carabott having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when Kevin Sammut got free with Kurt Mangion in the 69th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 73 minutes into the match, Peter Debono had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Mark Carabott. Kalkara Utd's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Peter Debono was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. Mark Carabott stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Peter Debono's shot from short distance in the 77th minute. 84 minutes into the match, Kalkara Utd's goal looked a bit too open when Peter Debono came free, but Mark Carabott reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Massimo Pace scored 2-1 in the 86th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Mark Carabott, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 96th minute, Domenic Debono got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Mellieħa's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
