Jan Fabricius started the match with the kick off. Len Nightingale made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Yannick Fürstenberg in the 3rd minute of play. In the 4th minute Jan Fabricius shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Len Nightingale saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Jan Fabricius had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 6th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Waterlooville booed when Hull City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 7 match minutes in a wonderful position. Yannick Fürstenberg didn't get a good kick on the ball. Waterlooville's Len Nightingale played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Yannick Fürstenberg in the 11th minute of play. Len Nightingale showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jan Fabricius in the 13th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Leon Leyburn in the 23rd minute of play forced Hull City's goalkeeper William Feuerstein to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The corner led to Waterlooville's Albert Hoskins getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. 29 minutes into the match, Hull City's Christof Heisenberg sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Len Nightingale narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 32nd minute, Neil Bagshaw hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Karlheinz König had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 37th minute, Jan Fabricius got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Yannick Fürstenberg managed to get in a good position for a shot. Hull City's supporters rose to their feet, but Yannick Fürstenberg was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Bob Hößler struck a weak shot in the 44th minute. Len Nightingale didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Hull City. The crowd rose to their feet as Hull City's Jan Fabricius slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Len Nightingale. That made the score 1-0 after 45 minutes of play. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Albert Hoskins was the one to do the kick off. 51 minutes into the match, Waterlooville's goal looked a bit too open when Bob Hößler came free, but Len Nightingale reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 52ndth minute of the game Bob Hößler who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Waterlooville's Len Nightingale was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Jan Fabricius in the 55th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Len Nightingale saved Waterlooville from getting behind. In the 57th minute Jan Fabricius shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Len Nightingale saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Bob Hößler fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 58th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Len Nightingale having to interfere. Jan Fabricius might have been able to make a better finish in the 60th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Len Nightingale. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Jan Fabricius ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 62nd minute Jan Fabricius shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Len Nightingale saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jan Fabricius fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 67th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Len Nightingale having to interfere. In the 68th match minute, Hull City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Yannick Fürstenberg to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to Waterlooville getting a freekick after 69 minutes play. Neil Bagshaw hit a great ball. Darius Kemmer sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
