The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux sent away a hard shot on goal in the 3rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Steevy Dumay struck a weak shot in the 6th minute. Paul-Émile Mathelin didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Montanay. In the 8th minute Steevy Dumay shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Paul-Émile Mathelin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Stade Rennais's zone, Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Paul-Émile Mathelin came out of the goal and Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 20th minute, Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After 23 played minutes Stade Rennais got a freekick which was hit by Ludovic Gall. Paul-Émile Mathelin showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Steevy Dumay in the 26th minute of the match. The supporters of Stade Rennais booed when Montanay was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 31 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sabri Groussard didn't get a good kick on the ball. Paul-Émile Mathelin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sabri Groussard, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. 35 minutes into the match, Stade Rennais's goal looked a bit too open when Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux came free, but Paul-Émile Mathelin reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 37th minute, Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Paul-Émile Mathelin came out of the goal in the 43rd minute to try and stop a shot by Montanay's Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux. But to his dismay, Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. The Stade Rennais players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Montanay were winning 0-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux to make the kick off. In the 54th minute, René Argentin made a precise shot to the right of Axel Pichaud. Montanay's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. Steevy Dumay recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 59th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Paul-Émile Mathelin made a fantastic save in the 60th minute, when Steevy Dumay sent off a good shot on target. If Steevy Dumay had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux sent away a hard shot on goal in the 72nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Jean-Christophe Desrousseaux fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 75th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Paul-Émile Mathelin having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when Steevy Dumay got free with Paul-Émile Mathelin in the 76th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Just Doucet might have been able to make a better finish in the 92nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Paul-Émile Mathelin. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Just Doucet ran back to his position shaking his head. Sabri Groussard blasted a shot towards the goal in the 93rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Paul-Émile Mathelin having to make a save. Montanay were disappointed that they only managed a draw, even though they felt themselves to be the better team.
