In the 21st minute, Florentin Tapin hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Patrice Claus's late challenge caught a Valenciennes's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Patrice Claus helped the player get up and apologised. In the 24th match minute, Nice was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Patrice Claus to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Valenciennes's Florentin Tapin got a free kick in the 26th minute. 29 minutes into the game, Valenciennes's Tudor Angheluș nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Pavel Lifanov made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Tudor Angheluș struck a weak shot in the 32nd minute. In the 35th minute Tudor Angheluș shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Pavel Lifanov saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 36 minutes had been played when some careless play by Nice's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Tudor Angheluș was slow to take the kick. During this time Valenciennes's players had a chance to rest. At last the ball reached Ilan Chêneau at the corner, ending with a kick to difficult to stop for the goalkeeper of Nice. 0-2. If Jordan Busch had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 47th minute, Oscar Cadieu reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of 武扬城. The goal made the score 1-2. The Nice players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Valenciennes were winning 1-2.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Tudor Angheluș to make the kick off. The Nice fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Valenciennes were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
