But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Xurxo Domenech couldn't finish the play. Joanes Zurica hit a great freekick 16 minutes into the match. In the 17th minute of the match Efraín Infante shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Marek van Basten showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Heliodoro Checa took the ball and in the 19 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Marek van Basten. Marek van Basten dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. The referee felt a red card was in order, 23 minutes into the game, when Ferdinand Quijana put in a rough tackle. Efraín Infante shot the penalty kick right outside the post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Heliodoro Checa in the 28th minute of play forced Apellaniz's goalkeeper Marek van Basten to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Xurxo Domenech made a kick off. With a little luck, Apellaniz's Marek van Basten got control of the ball when Paulino Diaz tried to sneak it across the goal line.
