Delmiro Rico took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jordi Baeza, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Arnaldo Maestro during the 25th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Club Atlético de Madrid booed when El Gremio was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 25 match minutes in a wonderful position. Arnaldo Maestro didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Jordi Baeza came up free with the goalie in the 28th minute, the Club Atlético de Madrid fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Jordi Baeza couldn't finish the play. Ovidio Vallejo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tino Barberá, who was totally free with the ball in the 39th minute. Delmiro Rico showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Kepa Obis in the 40th minute of the match. Club Atlético de Madrid's Ovidio Vallejo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tino Barberá in the 45th minute of play.

The wind increased when Jordi Baeza made the kick off in the second half. The throw-in from Caitano Cartagena in the 52nd minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Club Atlético de Madrid's Romeu Sanches. If Jordi Baeza had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. El Gremio's Delmiro Rico proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 54th minute of the match, managed to save El Gremio from getting a goal against them. Bao Blazquez's late challenge caught a El Gremio's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Bao Blazquez helped the player get up and apologised. Carlos Lop charged in rather forcefully in the 59th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Carlos Lop the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 59 played minutes Club Atlético de Madrid got a freekick which was hit by Carlos Lop. 66 minutes into the match, El Gremio's goalkeeper Delmiro Rico had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Jordi Baeza. After a rather tough play, El Gremio's Caitano Cartagena got a free kick in the 67th minute. When the match clock showed 70 minutes, the score became 0-3 when Jordi Baeza sped through El Gremio's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Delmiro Rico. José Patiño's late challenge caught a Club Atlético de Madrid's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. The tension between the Club Atlético de Madrid and the El Gremio players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 95 played minutes Club Atlético de Madrid got a freekick which was hit by Șerban Coman. The El Gremio fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Club Atlético de Madrid were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
