Conny Vogel started the match with the kick off. Edgar Suchowitzki charged in rather forcefully in the 3rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Edgar Suchowitzki the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Edgar Suchowitzki hit a great freekick 3 minutes into the match. 14 minutes into the match, Stuttgart's goal looked a bit too open when Elvis Freese came free, but Volker Böhland reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Conny Vogel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 18th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Siegmund Splett having to interfere. Andreas von Gartzen might have been able to make a better finish in the 22nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Volker Böhland. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Andreas von Gartzen ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 24th match minute, Stuttgart was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Manuel Bechthold to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Stuttgart's Marco Rohr got a free kick in the 25th minute. Adé Remse hit a great freekick 28 minutes into the match. If Andreas von Gartzen had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Andreas von Gartzen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Volker Böhland having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 37th minute, Lester Felich managed to get in a good position for a shot. Stuttgart's supporters rose to their feet, but Lester Felich was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Siegmund Splett breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Siegmund Splett made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lester Felich in the 38th minute. Elvis Freese fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 39th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Volker Böhland having to interfere. After 40 played minutes Stuttgart got a freekick which was hit by Marco Rohr. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Elvis Freese in the 42nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Volker Böhland saved Stuttgart from getting behind. 1.FC Union Berlin's Andreas Papies suffered a torn muscle in his knee after 42 minutes and couldn't finish the game. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Zlatko Rieth during the 42nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Andreas von Gartzen to strike the kick off in the second half. Siegmund Splett took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Conny Vogel, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Andreas von Gartzen sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Rico Polzer came up free with the goalie in the 63rd minute, the 1.FC Union Berlin fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Rico Polzer couldn't finish the play. Andreas von Gartzen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Volker Böhland having to interfere. If Conny Vogel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 75th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Andreas von Gartzen recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 80th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a rather tough play, Stuttgart's Zlatko Rieth got a free kick in the 82nd minute. 93 minutes into the game, Stuttgart's Conny Vogel nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Siegmund Splett made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-0. Stuttgart's supporters were highly satisfied with the result. They cheered their team of the pitch, having watched them win a very even match.
