In the 14th minute, Jörg Dudek made a precise shot to the right of Wayne Schlagbauer. Ballstedt's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. When Helmut Fuchs came up free with the goalie in the 24th minute, the Ballstedt fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Helmut Fuchs couldn't finish the play. If Tom Trachsel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 25th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 28thth minute of the game Helmut Fuchs who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but 1. FC Nürnberg's Ulrik Scheer was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Pekko Blenke kicked well hit freekick during the 29th minute of the match. Wayne Schlagbauer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hans Lehnecke in the 31st minute of play. Hans Lehnecke fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Wayne Schlagbauer having to interfere. After 37 played minutes Ballstedt got a freekick which was hit by Thomas Ballheim. Helmut Fuchs recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 40th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 42nd minute, Thomas Ballheim hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 46th minute, Jörg Dudek hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Helmut Fuchs had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. 1. FC Nürnberg walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
