Neulend's Gunther Kreis played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Henk Zischer in the 5th minute of play. Gunther Kreis showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Henk Zischer, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. When Gunther Strobel came up free with the goalie in the 30th minute, the St.Pauli fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gunther Strobel couldn't finish the play. Henk Zischer's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Gunther Kreis read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 34th minute of play. Gunther Kreis showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ben Grabert in the 38th minute of the match. If Dag Heß had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 48 minutes into the match, Neulend's goal looked a bit too open when Gunther Strobel came free, but Gunther Kreis reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

Henk Zischer could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 53rd minute of the match, but Gunther Kreis made a huge save. After having played for 55 minutes, Durs Grupe managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Neulend's supporters crossed their fingers, but Durs Grupe was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. A collision led to St.Pauli getting a freekick after 60 minutes play. Henk Zischer hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dag Heß in the 61st minute of play forced St.Pauli's goalkeeper Knud Ockmann to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 62nd minute Gunther Strobel shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gunther Kreis saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Henk Zischer kicked well hit freekick during the 64th minute of the match. Gunther Kreis made a fantastic save in the 68th minute, when Uwe Klomfaß sent off a good shot on target. Gunther Kreis made an important save on a dangerous shot by Henk Zischer in the 70th minute. When Neulend's Durs Grupe in the 72nd minute got a chance for a shot 72nd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye St.Pauli's goalie prevented a goal. The supporters of St.Pauli booed when Neulend was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 78 match minutes in a wonderful position. Heinz Schmieta didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 85th minute, Henk Zischer fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Gunther Kreis, passed just outside the right post. Henk Zischer could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 87th minute of the match, but Gunther Kreis made a huge save. Henk Zischer struck a weak shot in the 89th minute. Gunther Kreis didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for St.Pauli. Both teams had looked equal from kick-off, and no-one was surprised when the match finally ended in a draw.
