Borussia Dortmund's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. 13 minutes in the game, the ball went up into the seats when Borussia Dortmund's Eckehard Stelze fired away a shot that was just a little bit too high. He walked away shaking his head. When Christoph Auerbach fell near the penalty area in the 14th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Borussia Dortmund's protests and gave Christoph Auerbach a yellow card for diving instead. Christoph Auerbach kicked well hit freekick during the 15th minute of the match. Folke Arnim took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tim Campen, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Folke Arnim showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fritz Knappe, who was totally free with the ball in the 22nd minute. Fritz Knappe fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Folke Arnim having to interfere. In the 38th minute, Borussia Dortmund's Eckehard Stelze ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Ty Murmann. Ty Murmann yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-0. Folke Arnim made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tim Campen in the 42nd minute of play. In the 44th match minute, Borussia Dortmund was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Emmerich Pflüger to maneuver through the defense. In the 47th minute Tim Campen shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Folke Arnim saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.

After a rather tough play, Hamburger Sport-Verein's Emanuel Erdem got a free kick in the 50th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Eckehard Stelze in the 51st minute of play forced Hamburger Sport-Verein's goalkeeper Ty Murmann to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 53rd minute Eckehard Stelze shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ty Murmann saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Folke Arnim didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Fritz Knappe went, in the 64th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-2 was the resulting score. Ty Murmann dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-2. Folke Arnim made a fantastic save in the 76th minute, when Fritz Knappe sent off a good shot on target. Folke Arnim took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tim Campen, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 80th minute, Fritz Knappe got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Alfred Goetsch kicked well hit freekick during the 81st minute of the match. In the 82nd minute, Erwin Berge fired a really elegant long shot, but Folke Arnim threw himself and managed to get hold of the ball just in front of the right post. A collision led to Hamburger Sport-Verein getting a freekick after 87 minutes play. Erwin Berge hit a great ball. If Eckehard Stelze had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 88th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in Hamburger Sport-Verein's zone, Eckehard Stelze stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ty Murmann came out of the goal and Eckehard Stelze tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 91 minutes into the game, Borussia Dortmund's Emmerich Pflüger nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Ty Murmann made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-2. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Borussia Dortmund had won after a very even match.
