Schalker's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Kai Hoyer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ciro Alves in the 15th minute of play. Jan Kahn charged in rather forcefully in the 17th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Jan Kahn the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. 20 minutes into the match, Schalker's Edson Kläsener sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Isaak Jacob narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Lohne FSV's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Schalker the free kick. In the 41st match minute, Lohne FSV was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nikolas Czogalla to maneuver through the defense.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Ciro Alves stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Dirk Gutmann kicked well hit freekick during the 50th minute of the match. Kai Eshun fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kai Hoyer having to interfere. In the 57th minute Edson Kläsener shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Isaak Jacob saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jan Kahn scored 2-0 in the 61st match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Isaak Jacob, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. If Ciro Alves had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 67th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. A wasted opportunity for Schalker. 3-1 became the score in the 87th minute when Torben Kentschke elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. Torben Kentschke fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Isaak Jacob having to interfere. The supporters of Lohne FSV booed when Schalker was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 95 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hartmut Kerrutt didn't get a good kick on the ball. When the referee blew the final whistle, Schalker could leave the field as winners, despite Lohne FSV having more of the ball for most of the match.
